Back to School

SchoolbusIt is that time again. School busses on the road and lines at the office supply store; signaling the end of summer and the beginning of yet another year of school.  I remember the start of school with mixed feelings. I was always excited to see my friends and anticipated the start of football, but I was sad because the days of just hanging out were about to end. As I look back at that time I realize I overlooked a key aspect of my life and that was the reason for school; acquiring an education. Being given the opportunity to learn what I did not know.

I am writing this post because of what I learned in school. Now granted I did much better in math than English, but through the process I learned how to spell and where to place punctuation. The end result was to prepare me for what came next in life. Elementary school prepared me for middle school, middle school for high school, high school for college, and college for my adult life. Each step moved me a little farther along the spectrum. Fortunately my learning did not end when I finished college. As I have moved from job to job there have always been new challenges.  The difference is that I now understand the need for education. I had to go to school to learn how to manage a golf course. I had to go to school to get my Securities and Insurance licenses and I had to go to school to become a Certified Financial Planner. I benefited greatly from all of this education. Now I have changed my focus from learning to teaching.

After 20 years of helping people prepare for retirement I realized that most need an education before they transition into this next phase of life. Unfortunately there are very few options that provide unbiased education.  This leaves people dependent on companies and individuals that sell products to give advice. After more than 20 years of retirement planning I have found no subject that is misunderstood more than Social Security. It could be considered the most important decision one makes in retirement planning and yet it is the decision that is given the least amount of education.  For this reason I developed and teach classes that focus on Social Security optimization. I believe education and analysis can serve to provide the necessary facts and understanding needed to make the best decision for an individual retirement plan. This, like all other education, is designed to help you succeed in the next phase of your life. Moving forward I plan to  develop classes that focus on the subjects of Long Term Care insurance, Medicare,  and Social Security Disability insurance. This is why I am so excited about My Retirement Education Center. Our goal is to provide needed education at the most critical time of one’s life. If you have other topics that you think would provide more education for retirement planning please let me know. The goal of My Retirement Education Center is to give people the education they need to make wise decisions that affect the rest of their lives.
